Joseph CARMAN(GLOVER), son of Emma CARMAN (c. 1844-c. 1917), was born circa 1864 in North Lopham, Norfolk. Joseph was attested into the army on 12 December 1884, considered fit for service on 13 December, and joined the Royal Artillery at Colchester on 17 December, Ser. No. 45940. (It was stated that he had previously served withe the Norfolk Regiment but no further details could be found about this.) He served on home soil until 9 October 1886. He then served in India for over 6 years. While on duty on 19 April 1887, in Meerut, India he had a severe fall from a horse whilst on duty and was in hospital for 27 days. He returned home on 17 January 1893. On 24 January 1893 he was transferred to the Army Reserve for a four year period but was recalled under a Special Army Order of 20 December 1899. Joseph left the service on 1 February 1902, with a final discharge on 30 March 1902, having served 17 years 22 days, proposing to live in North Lopham. At the age of almost 50 years, on 26 November 1917, Joseph enlisted and joined the Royal Flying Corps, then moving to the Royal Air Force on 1 April 1918. He served at No. 5 Training Depot Sta􀆟on (5 TDS), Ser. No. 112365, Air Mechanic 2nd class. On 31 January 1919 transferred to Prees Heath (later known as RAF Whitchurch Heath). He was transferred to the R.A.F. Reserve on 2 March 1919 and deemed to have been discharged on 30 April 1920. Joseph died in 1921 in North Lopham. He was buried on 1 June 1921 in North Lopham, the ceremony was conducted by Rev. C J EASTWOOD - aged 57 years.
